Lankesterella ceracifolia

This plant is tiny!  The rosette of leaves, which is itself rather unusual, is only 4 cm across and the tiny flowers are 5 mm long.  The flowers bloom three or four to a spike and bloom successively in the spring.  The species is from Argentina and Brazil and is named after a famous naturalist and orchid collector, Charles H. Lankester.

Masdevallia coccinea 'Dwarf Pink'

Masdevallia coccinea is one of the larger Masdevallias with very long flower spikes, far to big for my collection.  This plant, however, is a dwarf form, that fits my growing area, though it is still quite large.  The plant is 15 cm tall (it can be twice that size) with flower spikes that reach another 15 cm above the plant.  The 5 cm flowers open are dark pink and fade to paler pink.  It blooms in the spring and is grown in a 15 cm pot in sphagnum moss.  The species is from the Peruvian Andes.

Pleurothallis mathildae

Pleurothallis or Trichosalpinx mathildae is a small species from Brazil.  The plant, with its paddle-shaped leaves is 7 cm tall and the flower spikes are also 7 cm long, growing from the base of the leaf.  The flowers, 6 or 7 to flower spike, are less than 1 cm.  The species is from Brazil and is easy to grow, producing its flowers in late winter or early spring.

Sigmatostalix uncinata

Sigmatostalix uncinata, from Ecuador, is a newly described species and is related to Oncidium.  It was in fact first included in that genus.  It is a small plant only 12 cm tall and looks like a fan of leaves with a small pseudobulb at the center of the leaves.  It carries several flowers at a time on each flower spike and they continue to produce flowers for several months.  The flowers are 2 cm and have a very prominent column which looks like a bird's head.  The plant seems to do best for me mounted on a small piece of tree fern.  It is one of around 70 species in a genus which ranges from Mexico to Brazil.

Luzama amaluzae

Better known as Masdevallia amaluzae, this small species is from Ecuador and seems to do best mounted.  It blooms in the spring with 3 cm flowers held well away from the plant on 6-8 cm spikes.  It  blooms reliably every spring.  I grow it with my other cool-temperature species.

Paphiopedilum China Dragon

Paphiopedilum China Dragon is a hybrid of Paphiopedilum Nisqually and Paphiopedilum China Song, and has four species in its background, Paphiopedilums acmodontum, appletonianum, bullenianum, and a double dose of sukhakulii.  It has beautifully variegated foliage and blooms faithfully for me every spring.  It is quite a small plant as Paphiopedilums go and the flowers are not large either, but I've kept, charmed by its lovely colors and shape.
