Dendrobium vexillarius

Dendrobium vexillarius is a high altitude miniature species from Papua New Guinea.  It is variable both in plant size and in flower color, producing flowers in a rainbow of colors on plants that are even smaller than this or four to five times as large.  My plant is 8cm tall.  The unusually colored flowers are 3 cm and last for many months.  They are produced at the end of the older pseudobulbs, often after the leaves have fallen off, and are usually two or three to each growth.

Dendrobium vexillarius is a variable species from the highlands of Papua New Guinea.  It is variable both in plant size and in flower color.  My plant is 8 cm tall but the species can be much larger.  The unusually colored flowers are 3 cm and last for many months.  They are produced at the end of the older pseudobulbs, often after the leaves have fallen off, and are usually two or three to each growth.  My plant is grown on a piece of cedar shingle and has a pad of moss around the roots.

Dendrobium vexillarius is a high altitude miniature species from Papua New Guinea.  It is variable both in plant size and in flower color.  My plant is 8cm tall, but may grow larger since it was grown from a seedling and began flowering when only half its present size.  The unusually colored flowers are 3cm and last for many months.  They are produced at the end of the older pseudobulbs, often after the leaves have fallen off, and are usually two or three to each growth.

Dendrobium vexillarius

This is a first bloom seedling, blooming on a very small plant.  Both plant size and flower color are extremely variable with this species.  I am very pleased with the flower color which can be red, orange, yellow, white, green, blue, grey, violet, purple or pink.  The flowers are a little less than 2.5 cm.  I am eager to see if how large the plant grows since this species can range from 3-40 cm.  If it stays small it is probably var. elworthyi.  It is from the highlands of New Guinea, the Moluccas and New Ireland, is cool-growing and belongs to the Oxyglossum section of the genus Dendrobium.
