Spilotantha chaetostoma

This small Masdevallia is from Ecuador.  It has been reclassified and placed in a new genus, but is still usually found under its old name.  The flowers are tiny, only 1.5 cm but there are four to five flowers per spike and when the plant is in bloom it looks like it has a cloud of little white insects hovering over it.  The spikes are 15 cm and the plant 6 cm.

Spilotantha chaetostoma

Also known as Masdevallia chaetostoma, this small plant is also from Ecuador.  The plant is 6 cm tall, the flower spikes 15 cm and the tiny white and yellow flowers, are 1.5 cm.  My plant is grown in sphagnum moss in a plastic net pot and blooms faithfully every spring.  It is from Ecuador and like cool temperatures and good humidity.

Spilotantha amanda

From Ecuador, this charming little species still goes under the name Masdevallia amanda, but has been reclassified as Spilotantha amanda.  The plant is only 8-10cm tall and the flowers are 1.5cm, three of four per spike.  "Amanda" means "beautiful" and the flowers, though rather oddly shaped are beautifully colored when seen up close.

Spilotantha or Masdevallia chaetostoma is a charming little plant.  It is from Ecuador and is only 6 cm tall, with 15 cm erect flower spikes.   The 1.5 cm flowers are like little white and yellow insects and come 5 or 6 per spike.

Spilotantha amanda

Formerly Masdevallia amanda, this attractive miniature species comes from Ecuador and is well-named, since amanda mean "enchanting.".  The plant is 7-8cm tall and the small flowers, about 1.5cm, are held well above the foliage and come 3-4 flowers per spike.
