Sigmatostalix uncinata

Sigmatostalix uncinata, from Ecuador, is a newly described species and is related to Oncidium.  It was in fact first included in that genus.  It is a small plant only 12 cm tall and looks like a fan of leaves with a small pseudobulb at the center of the leaves.  It carries several flowers at a time on each flower spike and they continue to produce flowers for several months.  The flowers are 2 cm and have a very prominent column which looks like a bird's head.  The plant seems to do best for me mounted on a small piece of tree fern.  It is one of around 70 species in a genus which ranges from Mexico to Brazil.

Sigmatostalix graminea looks like a tiny Oncidium and is in fact related to that genus.  It is a micro-miniature, the plant only 5 cm tall with tiny pseudobulbs and a tiny fan of deeply channeled leaves.  Its successively flowered spikes that come from the base of the pseudobulbs.  The flowers are a mere 5mm in size.  It is from Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

Sigmatostalix uncinata

Sigmatostalix uncinata is a recently described species from Ecuador.  It is related to Oncidium and has the same growth habit, a single leaf at the top of an oval pseudobulb and the pseudobulb surrounded by several sheathing leaves.  The plant is 12 cm tall and the flowers 2 cm.  It seems to do well with my other cool-temperature orchids and is mounted on a small piece of tree fern.  It seems to bloom every couple of months with two to three flowers per flower spike.

Sigmatostalix graminea is a tiny little species from Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.  The plant is 5cm tall with tiny pseudobulbs and successively flowered spikes that come from the base of the pseudobulbs.  The flowers are only 5mm in size.  The plant is related to Oncidium.
