Dendrobium seranicum 'Brendan'

It seems that all I've been posting recently are Dendrobiums, but in any case, here's another from the island of Seram in the Moluccas, Dendrobium seranicum. The 3 cm flowers come in pairs on the 8cm growths with their narrow channeled leaves. The plant belongs to the Oxyglossum section of the genus, Dendrobium and is one of the species in that section that is not from the island of New Guinea.

Dendrobium seranicum 'Brendan'

This is my awarded plant of the species. Dendrobium seranicum is from the island of Seram in the Moluccas, loves cool temperatures and high light, has very long lasting flowers on a miniature plant, and is one of the Oxyglossum Dendrobiums. The plant is 8 cm tall and the flowers are 3 cm, usually produced in pairs from the top of the pseudobulbs and between the two or three succulent leaves.

Dendrobium seranicum 'Brendan'

Dendrobium seranicum is a high-altitude species from New Guinea that loves cool temperatures, high light and lots of water and humidity. I grow it mounted on a piece of cork bark. The plant is 8 cm tall and the very long-lasting flowers are 3 cm. It belongs to the section Oxyglossum which includes some of my favorite orchids. They have brightly colored long-lasting flowers, and with a few exceptions are miniatures.

Dendrobium seranicum

I have two plants of this species, one plant awarded, the flowers of which are not quite as brightly colored as this. It is a spring bloomer and blooms well on a rather attractive plant. The individual growths are 8 cm and the flowers 3 cm. The species is from the highlands of Papua New Guinea and belongs to the Oxyglossum group of Dendrobiums.

The other plant has flowers that are a slightly paler pink and the lip does not have the bright red tip. Both, however, fall within the range of variation for this species. The photo below shows the flowers of the other plant, Dendrobium seranicum 'Brendan' CBR/AOS.

Northwest Orchid Society Show

This post is long overdue. The show featured in the post was held last spring and I have only now gotten around to sorting the pictures and posting some of them here for your perusal.

The Northwest Orchid Society draws from the Seattle area and is larger than our own Mount Baker Orchid Society. Its show is held every spring at a large nursery in Shoreline, Washington.

I did not have a display in the show or plants in the Mount Baker Society display, but did attend and brought several plants for American Orchid Society judging, three of which were awarded.

Shows are notoriously difficult for good pictures, though this show is better than many with a lot of table top exhibits backed with black velvet. I apologize for the poor quality of some pictures

I apologize, too, for the fact that I did not get all the names. I make a practice of photographing the tags along with the plants, but in some cases forget to do so or do not find a name with the plant.
