Previously known as Pleurothallis canidentis, this small plant has the heart-shaped leaves characteristic of the group, and the flowers, like the other Acronias, are carried on short stems, so that the flower lies on the upper surface of the leaf.
This species is one of the smaller Acronias, and is native to Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia. The leaves with their stems are about 15 cm tall and the flowers are 2 cm tall. It is cool growing and does well either in a pot or mounted.
The species name, canidentis, means "dog's tooth," and refers to the shape of the petals, though the resemblance entirely escapes me. This, then, is the Dog's Tooth Pleurothallis, or the Dog's Tooth Acronia, but by any name a worthwhile plant.
in the close up the flower simply glows. Almost like neon
ReplyDeleteMarti, it was hard to photograph for that reason - the colors, the texture were very difficult to capture.
ReplyDeleteLovely orchid, and I agree, nicely photographed as well. I am looking into getting a better camera myself, it is nearly impossible to photograph small flowers like these with a point and shoot... Seeing you lovely photos makes me want to run out and do it now! ;)
ReplyDeleteIf you get a camera, Karma, you'll have to get a macro lens with it. I've never had as much fun as I've had with my "relatively" new macro.
ReplyDeleteI know... that is what is holding me back as both a DSLR plus a decent macro lens will cost quite a a lot of money... I have been curious about this new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 however. It has received really good reviews and says it will shoot 1:1 down to 1 cm focal distance in macro mode, and will shoot RAW... but perhaps I might as well bite the bullet and do it right from the beginning. Ah... such a hard decision...
ReplyDeleteI bought my wife a Panasonic FZ28 because of the good reviews and she is pretty happy with it. I like the fact that I can interchange lenses, buts he doesn't want to bother - but then there's always the cost, alas! Orchids or camera ... camera or orchids.
