Sophrolaeliocattleya Circle of Life

This is one of the few hybrids I grow and one of the few Cattleyas I grow.  It's a hybrid of Laeliocattleya Culminant and the tiny red species, Sophronitis coccinea and due to the renaming of the species in its background would now be known simply as Cattleya Circle of Life.  It is a small plant as Cattleyas go, only 25 cm tall with 7-8 cm flowers, two per growth.  It blooms faithfully every winter or spring and is one I raised from a very small seedling.

Dendrobium oreodoxa x cuthbertsonii

I purchased this hybrid several years ago and as far as I know it is still unnamed.  It is a hybrid of the micro-miniature Dendrobium cuthbertsonii from section Oxyglossum and the much larger cane-type Dendrobium oreodoxa from section Calyptrochilus, both species from New Guinea.  The hybrid seems little influenced by the Dendrobium oreodoxa parent.  Both plant and flowers look like the other parent, Dendrobium cuthbertsonii.  The individual growths are less than 3 cm and the flowers are nearly 4 cm long.

Dendrobium Flower Baby

Dendrobium Flower Baby is a hybrid of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii with Dendrobium victoria-reginae, a much larger species with thin semi-pendant canes.  In color and patterning the flowers resemble the larger parent but the plant size has been much reduced and the canes have become thick upright pseudobulbs.  I have two plants of this cross, this plant slightly taller than the other with paler flowers.  The plant is 10 cm tall and the flowers 3 cm.

Dendrobium Mountain Magic

Dendrobium Mountain Magic is a hybrid of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, less than 3 cm tall, and Dendrobium pseudoglomeratum, a very large plant.  The smaller parent has reduced the plant size to around 15 cm but the flowers are still very large, 4 cm long.  The plant blooms several times a year and is more tolerant of warm temperatures than its Dendrobium cuthbertsonii parent.  My plant is grown in live sphagnum in a plastic net pot with cool temperatures and good humidity and light.

Phalaenopsis Mini Mark 'Holm'

Grown on a bathroom windowsill, this is the only Phalaenopsis hybrid I own.  It's a very small plant, a hybrid of Phalaenopsis Micro Nova and Phalaenopsis philippinense.  It blooms faithfully every spring and I keep it because of its small size.  Like all Phalaenopsis it requires warm temperatures and lower light and does very well on a windowsill.

Paphiopedilum Awasubihs Faith

This plant actually belongs to my son, but I've been keeping it for him.  It is a hybrid of Paphiopedilum Nightfire and Paphiopedilum Slipknot, the only complex Paphiopedilum hybrid we have in the house.  It has a very tall and strong flower stem and beautiful foliage and blooms well, sometimes with two flowers to a spike.  It is not grown with most of my orchids but on a bathroom windowsill where it does very well.

Dendrobium Gina Perlite 'Crystal White'

Dendrobium Gina Perlite is a hybrid of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and Dendrobium prasinum.  It has, more or less, the growth habit of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, though the leaves do not have the pebbled surface of that species and the growths are generally a little fatter and larger.  Its flowers certainly look like the flowers of Dendrobium cuthbersonii.  The pale yellow flowers are 4 cm long and 3 cm across the face of the flower, but the clonal name is misleading since the flowers are very definitely not crystal white.

Dendrobium Illusion

This is one of several plants I own of the hybrid of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and Dendrobium lawesii.  The cross has reduced the size of Dendrobium lawesii, a species with long pendant canes, and has produced a plant with erect growths and flowers that are more open (those of Dendrobium lawesii are tubular).  The hybrid has canes 12 cm tall with 3 cm flowers that are produced in clusters.  The leaves have the "pebbled" appearance of the Dendrobium cuthbertsonii parent.
