Dendrobium leucocyanum

Dendrobium leucocyanum is a miniature species from high altitude montane forests in New Guinea.  It is cool to cold growing and produced clusters of pale blue flowers in late winter.  The flowers are 0.4cm long and do not open very widely.  The pseudobulbs with their leaves are 2-3cm tall.  The plant blooms on the older leafless pseudobulbs. This is the second time I've had it bloom but this time with only two flowers.  I may have to try slightly lower light.

Mediocalcar decoratum

Mediocalcar decoratum is an unusual miniature, mat-forming species from the highlands of New Guinea.  It is cool growing and does well either on a mount or in a pot, but needs room to ramble.  The individual growths are about 1 cm, have a thick fleshy stem and a fan of four tiny fleshy leaves at the top.  Each new growth begins near the top of the previous growth, forming an ever-lengthening chain.  The flowers, 0.5 cm in size, come from the base of the growths and look like tiny candy-corns.  Though cool-growing the plant is very easy to grow and is very tolerant of different conditions.

Dendrobium alaticaulinum

Dendrobium alaticaulinum is a New Guinea Dendrobium from the Calyptrochilus section of that genus, though most of the New Guinea Dendrobiums I grow are from the Oxyglossum section.  The Calyptrochilus Dendrobiums tend to be large plants with long semi-pendant canes, but this species is very small in comparison, the canes around 15 cm.  The 2 cm flowers bloom at the end of the canes in clusters and do not open very widely.  The plant is not a very eager bloomer for me, but since I reduced the light a bit it has bloomed more freely, this the best blooming yet.

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii bicolor

This is another one of my Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, the same species as the orange-flowered plant I posted not long ago, but this, obviously, is an entirely different color and is in fact a bicolored cultivar.  Like other plants of the species the flowers are veyr large for the size of the plant and last six to eight months.  The plant, some of which can be seen in the photos, is less than 3 cm tall and the flowers are 4-5 cm.  Some of my plants I grow in pots but this mounted on a piece of cedar shingle.

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii

I've posted this species many times, since I grow numerous plants of it with many differently colored flowers.  This is the best orange-flowered plant I have.  The flowers do not open quite as widely as some but both size and color are good.  The plant is the usual few cm tall.

Dendrobium agathodaemonis

Dendrobium agathodaemonis is very closely related to Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and considered to be the same species by some.  To my mind, however, they are quite different, the former species having very thin growths and flowers without the dark lip markings that Dendrobium cuthbertsonii has.  This is a plant I grew from a seedling and which has rather small but very clear red flowers.  The plant is only a couple of centimeters tall and the flowers around three centimeters long.  Like its close relative, it is from New Guinea and is cool growing.

Dendrobium hellwigianum

I posted this species several weeks ago but the photos were of another plant, since I have two plants.  This is the other, not much different except that flowers have a slightly different color.  The species is from New Guinea, belong to the oxyglossum section fo the genus Dendrobium and is around 10 cm tall with 3-4 cm flowers.

Dendrobium hellwigianum

I have two different plants of Dendrobium hellwigianum, the other one of them a paler pink and with more of a bluish cast to the flowers.  The species seems easy enough to grow when given cool temperatures and high light.  In this case the plant is 10 cm tall and the individual flowers between 3 and 4 cm and usually produced in pairs at the top of the pseudobulb and between the narrow channeled leaves.  Like all the Oxyglossum Dendrobiums the flowers are very long-lasting.
