Dendrobium Mountain Magic is a hybrid of the tiny Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and the much larger cane-type Dendrobium pseudoglomeratum. The plant resembles the larger parent but is much reduced in size by the influence of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, with 12-15 cm canes and huge flowers that resemble those of Dendrobium pseudoglomeratum. It is very easy to grow, much easier than either parent, is temperature tolerant and flowers profusely throughout the year.

Thanks, Elisabete. It's a little large for me though much smaller than the D. pseudoglomeratum parent, but I can't resist those pink and orange flowers.
DeleteGreat Mountain Magic. The orange lip really makes it for me. I still have not gotten one from Mountain and wish I would have not delayed.
ReplyDeleteI have a question about another cuthbertsonii hybrid.
glomeratum x cuthbertsonii is now available from Ecua.
Have you grown or bloomed this before? I was wondering about the overall plant size, ect. I only found one pic and I have no idea how uniform the size is with this cross or the variability in the flowers. Any ideas?
I assume you mean Ecuagenera, and I have not seen that hybrid, though it sounds interesting. I would assume it would be similar to Mountain Magic and Illusion, 4-6 inches tall, but I do not know anything about it. It appears that Darren at Mountain Orchids has only one clone of Mountain Magic that he's selling, but whether that was the only one with decent flowers or whether the cross only produced a few plant, I do not know.
