Dendrobium christyanum

Dendrobium christyanum is from Thailand, Vietnam and China and has huge flowers for the size of the plant.  My plant is about 5 cm tall and the flowers are about the same size.  It belongs to the group of Dendrobiums known as nigrohirsute Dendrobiums, referring to the black hairs with which the plant is covered and it is sometimes found under the older name, Dendrobium margaritaceum  It blooms in the summer and is temperature tolerant.  The flowers are fragrant.

    1. Thanks, as always, Elisabete. I'm sure you've posted some more beauties as well.

  2. A very nice delicate flower. I have found that this group of Dendrobiums can be more difficult for me to grow than some Oxyglossums.

    1. I find these more difficult, too, than the Oxyglossums, some of them anyway. I've shyed away from them for years as a result, but recently picked up this species to try again.

  3. That makes me feel a little better. I thought that it may be my inexperience. I had a D. tobaense and it did great for a year, then declined without any identifiable reason. I do know I have a hard time managing the amount of water needed. When Dendro's like this one have very thin canes, I run into problems. I have been told by many Thai growers, they should go in straight sphagnum with packing peanuts as aeration.

    1. I've never been very successful with these, Chad. They do okay for a while and then they seem to decline. I've got my fingers crossed with this one.
