Masdevallia mystica belongs to the Saltatrices group of Masdevallias. The species in this group have bright colors, tubular flowers and "bellies," a noticeable bulge at the
base of the flower. This "species" is from Ecuador, but is probably a natural hybrid of Masdevallia filaria and Masdevallia ventricularia,
two other species in this group. The plant is 10 cm tall and the flowers are
surprisingly small, only a little over 2 cm.
The flowers are very original. The Masdevallias always deserve the effort to cultivate them. Happy new year, Ron

DeleteHi Ron, I found your blog about three years ago while doing research for a new orchidarium build. Yours was the most impressive I had found. Also your collection and taste in species matches mine nearly plant for plant.
ReplyDeleteWe also know a lot of the same people, Marni, Darrin, Andy, Dan, Tom Perlite. So you were one of the inspirations for what has become
Acme Orchidarium co. acmeorchidarium.com
Keep up the great work on your Blog, it's one of the best on the web.
Best regards.
Mike Leone
Thanks.
