Mediocalcar versteegii 'Mountainside'

I've seen this species under two names and am not sure which is correct.  I purchased it as Mediocalcar versteegii, but have also seen it under the name Mediocalcar uniflorum.  In either case it is from New Guinea and is a rambling plant, each new growth coming from the top of the previous growth.  It blooms late winter to early spring and the flowers are not long-lasting.  I have my plant in a pot, but most of it is not in the pot and doesn't need to be.

  1. Hi Ron,

that's a beautiful species, which I don't grow! my M. bifolium is full of buds, may I ask some pollen of it to make an attempt at an interspecific?

    Cheers
    Laurent

    5. The post office wouldn't let me mail the plant and so I'll send the pollen Monday and try to figure what to do with the plant.

  2. Ron, this keys out to versteegii. The difference is that in uniflorum the rhizome is always produced from the base of the pseudobulbs, leading to a more horizontal growth pattern, in versteegii the rhizome is produced from half way to the top of the pseudobulbs leading to a more vertical, climbing habit. My 2 cents, Bill
