Masdevallia datura is named for the enormous Angel Trumpet flowers belonging to the genus Datura or Brugmansia. Its flowers are nowhere near the size of the Angel Trumpets but are large for the size of the plants. The plants of this Masdevallia
are 12-15 cm tall, with narrow leaves and flowers, measured from tip
to tip that are as large as the plant. The species is from Bolivia and is cool
growing. It is not a prolific bloomer for me, but has done better since I reduced the light, cut back fertilizing to almost nothing, and let it dry out a bit more between waterings.
One of my very favourite spp for perfume! a well bloomed plant can easily fill my greenhouse with jasmine-like smell! Sadly this year, no bloom for me, I waited too long before repotting the plants, and they are trying to regain vigour now.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Laurent. Magnificent flowers, aren't they? I did forget to mention the scent, but you are correct and that is another bonus. Mine too is recovering from a set-back, probably over fertilizing.
DeleteBeautiful Masdevallia, I like a lot of the photographs. Best regards, Ron
ReplyDeleteThanks, Angel. It would be difficult not to like this species.
DeleteBeautiful flowers! I have a thing for white orchids. Love this one! Beautiful pictures too.
ReplyDeleteThis one is very fragrant, too, Aneta. Thanks for stopping by.
