I brought this plant to the Northwest Regional Judging Center in Seattle last Saturday and it was awarded a Certificate of Cultural Merit by the American Orchid Society (CCM/AOS), with 22 flowers and 7 buds. I've posted pictures of this plant previously, and it always blooms profusely, but this was by far its best blooming to date.

Gorgeous masdie, I never saw one with such abundancy of blooms! I also like the little "pearl" in the middle of the flower...
ReplyDeleteThanks for looking and commenting, friend. It's by far and away the most floriferous M. decumana I've ever owned and I've had a number of different plants.
ReplyDeleteSpeechless... art...
ReplyDeleteIt' s a stunning winner and disserves it!!! Congratulations Ron!!!
Could you be so kind to tell us about the cultural conditions?
Thank you,
greetings from Greece,
Efi
Thanks for looking and commenting, Efi. I grow this plant on the cool side of intermediate. It is mounted on a cedar block that is well weathered, and has a small pad of sphagnum under the roots which has developed into a mound of live moss. I water it every day with a sprayer and put a pinch of fertilizer into two gallons of water (I think I'm using 15-30-15 at the moment). Occasionally I water without the fertilizer. I also take care when the plant is not in flower not to get water on the flowers since they are susceptible to spotting.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning! I just ordered this Masdie, and am hoping I will be able to grow and bloom this one - I've managed to kill all the others. Now that I've seen your photo I definitely have to have this one! Thanks for sharing it with us, it is beautiful! Congratulations!

Hi Patrick. I'll write you a bit more on email. Have been reading the posts at Orchid Board and need to think a bit more about them.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely wonderful! Would you be able to point me in the right direction in regards to finding a division of this particular clone?
ReplyDeleteForgot to add, that I am really enjoying your blog. I just came across it today for the first time. Looking forward to 2012!
ReplyDeleteThanks for looking and commenting, Chuck. I bought this clone from Andy's, I believe, and as far as I know I'm the only one who has it. I can keep you in mind, though when I'm ready to divide it and perhaps we can work a trade or something.
ReplyDeleteI've already posted two Masdevallias for the new year and have two or three other posts ready to go.
ReplyDeleteWow!! Ron, incredible bloom! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind comments and thanks, too, for your visit.
