Reichantha striatella

Reichantha or Masdevallia striatella is an attractive and prolific species from Ecuador.  It is distinguished by its bold stripes which are rather rather rare among Masdevallias.  The plant is 8 cm tall and the flowers are 1.5 cm long.  It blooms early in the winter and I grow it, like most of my Masdevallias, in a plastic net pot in live sphagnum moss.

  1. Love your photos. They are introducing me to orchids I have not yet see and find very interesting.

    2. I intend to read all your posts so I can learn more about orchids.
I love nurturing and growing orchids. I have about 100 orchids now growing on shelves in front of East, South and West windows- Ascoendas, Bulbs, Cats., Cync., Cym., Den., Epi., Lycaste, Masd., Maxillaria, Milt., Odon., Onc., Paphs., Phals., Vanda.,and Zygopetalums. All but four that are in my south window in the dining room ( I'm trying to convince my husband we don't really need the dining room since we only use it about a dozen times a year) are growing happily in my bow shaped kitchen that has four large windows and a double sliding glass door. Lots of light. I enjoy living among my orchids, especially during our Canadian winters, and benefit from the positive energy they provide. Out of necessity, I'm trying to limit my new purchases to smaller orchids.

    3. Hi Elona,
Sounds like you have a really nice collection and are doing well with them. They do tend to take over one's house and one's life, however. I remember the days when ever window had orchids in it, or so it seemed. Now I pretty much limit myself to my wardian case. You are certainly right, too, about the color they provide during the winter months which seem especially colorless and drab this year for lack of sunshine.

  2. as always these are truly enchanting in their perfect form and detail

I see why you love them so much.

For me it is the candy stripes that make it.
