Dendrobium cuthbertsonii bicolor

I grow numerous clones of this species in all different colors and sizes, but this is one of my favorites.  I like the rose-purple and the clear color differentiation, as well as the fact that the flowers open widely.  Like at Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, this is a tiny plant, only a couple of centimeters tall with huge flowers for the size of the plant, in this case 4-5 cm.

  1. Beautiful! I love it when the flowers open so widely on cuthbertsonii and this pink is such a nice soft blush. The pot is great too. Does the plant stay in this pot year round?

    1. Thanks for the comments, Josh. The plant does not grow in this pot. I used the pot only for photographing the plant. Otherwise it grows in a small clay pot.

  2. Gorgeous blooms! Someone mentioned on FB that you grow many orchids in live sphagnum (incl. Masdevallias and D. cuthbertsonii). Could you please direct me to any post/s that discuss this? I'm particularly interested in the management of feeding/fertilizing when the growing medium is live sphagnum.
    Thanks, Ari.

    1. Hi Ari,
I use live sphagnum when I can get it because the the other seems to deteriorate too quickly. It also gets hard and dry as it gets older and harder to water. The one difficulty with live sphagnum is that it sometimes overwhelms the orchid and has to be cut back. You also need to make sure it's insect and critter free.
